Nottingham is great for world-famous artists performing on your doorstep, sometimes in intimate venues. One of the most prominent comedians at the moment, Iliza Schlesinger brought her show Fluent in English to a few hundred people in Nottingham’s Glee Club on a Monday night...

Having just put out a monster of a Netflix special, Elder Millennial, Iliza has caught the attention of a wide variety of humans, and the crowd reflected that.

The New York native started with a segment about everybody’s favourite baking show, and the differences between the graceful British acceptance of loss, and the toys-out-the-pram anger of the Americans. Proper funny stuff.

Having got married earlier this year at the age of 35 – which Schlesinger claims makes her an “elder millennial” – a significant portion of the set is dedicated to her experience, and the ridiculous traditions and cliches surrounding the world of marriage. There’s a roar-inducing bit about her groom’s issues with her wedding garter, and she talks about how backwards it is for the bride, who organised the majority of the event, to spend a portion of it practically blinded behind a veil.

Schlesinger’s impressive range of pitch and voices keeps the performance exciting – even with a British accent that’s borderline offensive – and it was a joy to see her on a smaller local stage.
