Champyun Clouds launched their new album Branched Out at Nottingham's Rough Trade on Sunday 23 January and it was a belter gig. We headed down to see what it was all about...
This was my first visit to the first-floor bar/stage at Rough Trade since the foul-mouthed C***d hit the streets, I'm no interior designer but the venue looks much improved and a great setting for live music, so I was excited to see how the album launch would go.
I was very quickly not disappointed and the Nottingham duo of Asa Hudson and Neil 'Nail' Tolliday had gathered a large crowd of fans, all eager to start the dancing. They played mainly tracks from the new album, which includes some catchy masterpieces like Check For Slit, Show Me How You Shuffle, Dig That Whisper and Silly Money. This is an impressive second album release and available on download and CD, and soon to be available on Vinyl.

The boys done good, they gave a performance that demanded your attention from the get go, as the first sub bass riff hit out and dragged everyone to their feet. Their set of Space Pop/Indie sounds took the crowd on a journey and visited lands of retro Funk, 70's guitar effects and 90's House, all fused into a memorable performance. Sunday gigs are not the easiest to please a crowd but Champyun Clouds bossed the night, highly addictive bass patterns and rhythms made sure you were paying attention throughout the set. Nails really nailed the sounds and beats, in complete control of his musical workstation and no one doubted his ability, leaving Asa Hudson to show us a more fragile journey through his vocals and guitar. Superb album launch, thank you Rough Trade and thank you Champyun Clouds.
