George White, aged 25, has contributed to LeftLion for several years, stepping up as Screen Editor in 2019 and into the role of Assistant Editor in June 2021. Prior to that he was a reporter for the Derby Telegraph, having studied at both Nottingham Trent University (MA Magazine Journalism, 2019-2020) and the University of Nottingham (BA Politics and International Relations, 2015-2018). George has also edited our Welcome To Nottingham student publication for the last two years.

George said: “I’m delighted to be taking on what is undoubtedly a dream role for me, I can’t wait to get started. LeftLion is a proper Nottingham institution, and one that I’ve really grown to love since writing my first article for them three years ago, so I’m honoured to be taking up this position. I’d like to say a special thanks to Ashley for all of his guidance and support since I first joined the team, and congratulate him on three years of incredible success with the magazine. I have some big shoes to fill!”

He takes over the role from Ashley Carter, aged 34, who has been our editor since January 2019. In that time Ashley has steered our magazine through the covid-19 pandemic, put out our 150th issue and helped the magazine expand its distribution across the county. Ashley also leaves having edited more issues of LeftLion than any of the previous four incumbents; Bridie Squires (2017-2019), Alison Emm (2013-2017), Al Needham (2008-2013) and Jared Wilson (2003-2008).]

“I have loved being editor of LeftLion, and feel incredibly lucky to have been able to do it for so long. But now feels like the right time to hand it over to the next generation, and having worked with George for the last couple of years I know I’m leaving the magazine in extremely good hands.”

Also stepping up is Lizzy O’Riordan, aged 23, who takes on George’s old role as Assistant Editor. Lizzy first joined LeftLion on work experience as a 17-year-old after winning the 16-18 year-old Creative Writing category at the 2016 Young Creative Awards Nottingham. A former student at Christ The King school in Arnold, she went on to study a BA English Literature at the University of Roehampton from 2018 – 2021, before joining the LeftLion team full-time in August 2021 as part of the Government-funded Kickstart scheme.
