Nottingham is world famous for its lace industry. Reaching its peak in the late 1800s, Nottingham was a main trading centre for lace machinery and a world capital for lace expertise and innovative design. Manufacturers, traders, and lace workers from across the world travelled to Nottingham to learn about and work in the industry. Some of these people stayed in Nottingham, becoming British citizens and turning the lace capital of Nottingham into a cosmopolitan capital.

This event uncovers and shares the local and international history of lace making in Nottingham. Audience members will be transported into the lives and workplaces of generations past by hearing and discussing recordings of the people who worked in the lace industry. Then, audience members will be able to learn about the lace-making machines and have an opportunity to get involved in this creative and complex industry by having a go at making their own lace.

This event is part of the University of Nottingham's festival Hub programme.
