Word Up: Young Creatives Do Poetry at Bluecoat Academy

8 November 21

Young Creatives Nottingham has teamed up with local poet (and former LeftLion Editor) Bridie Squires to deliver a series of poetry workshops with young people at Bluecoat Beechdale Academy...

The Young Creative Awards is an annual competition open to anyone aged 11 to 24 who lives, works or studies in Nottingham. In recent years, however, it’s become more than just a competition as the charity that organises the awards has been piloting a series of creative projects in the local community, to inspire the next generation of young creatives.

One recent project was Word Up, which saw 11 Year 10 students from Bluecoat Beechdale Academy taking part in a series of poetry and performance workshops with poet Bridie Squires (herself a former Young Creative Awards winner). The project culminated in a masterclass with rapper and beatboxer (and Nottingham legend!) Motormouf and a special performance for parents and families, in October 2021. Filmmaker Georgianna Scurfield was there to capture the final showcase and to speak to some of the participants.

Word Up was initiated by Young Creatives Nottingham and funded by the Danielle Beccan Memorial Fund and the Thomas Wall Trust. Huge thanks to all of the participants and the staff at Bluecoat Beechdale Academy, especially Grace Balchin, Martha Toogood, Lou Dee and Alan Butters.

We have a favour to ask…

LeftLion is Nottingham’s meeting point for information about what’s going on in our city, from the established organisations to the grassroots. We want to keep what we do free to all to access, but increasingly we are relying on revenue from our readers to continue. Can you spare a few quid each month to support us?
