Anyway, unlike the audience who plainly couldn’t be bothered, The Posies were the complete opposite and played with a vibrant, loud, brash energy right to the very end, even though it seemed they were fighting a losing battle against the under-whelming Rescue Rooms attendees. Occasional REM sideman Ken Stringfellow, the most lively of the thrilling quartet, played and sang like a man possessed by the Tasmanian Devil, if he wasn’t pulling star jumps with his guitar and head banging like the 70’s hadn’t gone out of style, he was shouting and screaming into two microphones. During the encores, he even stepped into the crowd to sing and play guitar, probably trying to whip the majority of the audience out of their collective coma. Whilst Jon Auer sang and played guitar like it was no effort at all, and yet pulled-out some wonderful growling power chords from his guitar, which gave the poppy melodies a hard-edge. The band weren’t shy about talking to the audience, and after ‘Conversations’, they even cheekily told the crowd, “I would like a song like that on my personal stereo, so I would go buy the record so I could listen to it.” Whilst at other moments they weren’t shy about showing their fondness for whiskey. The crowd may have been absolutely rubbish, but The Posies were brilliant, with sublime brand of power-pop-rock being a decent alternative to the skinny tie/tight trouser brigade who seem to be so en vogue at the moment. But even their frustrations at not being able to motivate the under-appreciative crowd showed by the ended with Jon Auer throwing his guitar at the drums and the bass player dismissing the audience with a few words and a swipe of his hand.
